Sources and processes of water-soluble and water-insoluble organic aerosol in cold season in Beijing, China

Abstract. Water-soluble and water-insoluble organic aerosol (WSOA WIOA) constitute a large fraction of fine particles in winter northern China, yet our understanding their sources processes are still limited. Here we have comprehensive characterization WSOA cold season Beijing. Particularly, present the first mass spectral WIOA by integrating online offline measurements from high-resolution spectrometer. Our results showed that on average accounted for 59 % total OA comprised dominantly secondary (SOA, 69 %). The composition significant changes during transition autumn to winter. While photochemical-related SOA dominated (51 %) early November, oxidized biomass burning increased substantially 8 29 heating season. Comparatively, local primary cooking contributed major clean periods. largely different patterns which were characterized prominent hydrocarbon ions series low oxygen-to-carbon (O/C = 0.19) mass-to-organic carbon (OM/OC 1.39) ratios. nighttime less properties 0.16 vs. 0.24) with more pronounced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) signals than daytime, indicating impacts enhanced coal combustion emissions WIOA. evolution process was further demonstrated triangle plot f44 (fraction m/z 44 OA) f43, f60, Van Krevelen diagram (H/C O/C).
